Wow, what an idea I had in the shower today!!!!!!!
Have you ever seen that TV commercial for Windows 7, where the guy is taking a shower, and all of a sudden an idea just hits him (Windows 7), well that just happened to me this morning. And what you are now reading is the fruit of that idea!
Welcome to the first installment, hopefully of many more to come, of Ralph’s Passion. As you can see by the subtitle, my passion and ongoing vocation is BOOKS, BOOKS, and more BOOKS!!!! Along with many other functions here at Kaufer’s Religious Supplies, http://www.kaufersonline.com/ my main responsibilities are as the book buyer for the store. I love my job, I’m surrounded by books, everywhere I look I see books, and if you have ever been to my home, you would see the same thing, stacks and stacks of books, and book shelves spilling over with more books.
As the book buyer, my biggest daily challenge is to keep Kaufer’s stocked with the best, most relevant, and up-to-date selection of Books, DVD’s and of course Music. We are a Catholic Gift, church goods, and book store, but we also try to be ecumenical, which means there is an enormous amount of material out there. The bottom line is, this is an enormous task, but one that I truly enjoy. As hard as I work at it, some new book, DVD or CD comes out that I haven’t heard about, until a customer calls me and tells me about it.
So back to my “shower idea” from this morning! I want to create a forum for our loyal customers, friends, and associates to tell me, and all of our newsletter and website readers about what they are reading, watching, or listening to, what they are enjoying, and what they are not too crazy about in the Catholic Book, DVD, and Music industry.
Every month I will pick a book, let you know which one it is, hoping that you will want to read it along with me, then I will give you my honest and no-holds barred opinion. My desire is to make this interactive, so you can give me your input, challenge my thoughts, suggest books, or just say hi. I promise that I will respond to each and every response, and if your response really gets my attention, I will share it in the newsletter, and answer it, so everyone can benefit from your thoughts.
Hopefully this will be a fun and informative process for everyone. I know it will be fun for me, we’ll just see how informative it is for you. Please let me know, don’t be shy!
As this process develops, and as we start having a conversation, I see us going well beyond books, DVD’s and Music. I intend to touch on anything Catholic, controversial and non-controversial! Hopefully, we can all share ideas, and I look forward to having a conversation with each and every one of you.
This month’s book will be:
Home Tonight: Further Reflections on the Parable of the Prodigal Son by Henri J.M. Nouwen
A Guide to Finding Your Spiritual Home
Please keep tuned in as I give you updates and thoughts as I begin Henri Nouwen’s latest book.
Just as a side note, it’s very odd for me to call this his latest book since he died September 21st, 1996.
If you haven’t heard of Henri J.M. Nouwen, let me give you a brief overview of his life from the back flap of Home Tonight: Further Reflections on the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
“Henri Nouwen was born in Holland in 1932 and ordained a Catholic priest in 1957. He obtained his doctoral degree in psychology and taught at Notre Dame, Yale, and Harvard. He experienced the monastic life with Trappist monks at the Abbey of the Genesee, lived among the poor in Latin America, and was interested and active in numerous causes related to social justice. After a lifetime of seeking, he finally found his home as pastor of L’Arche Daybreak, a community where intellectually handicapped people and their caregivers live together.”
